For women no longer happy with the shape of their breasts, a breast lift may offer the rejuvenation you seek. Over time, breasts can lose their shape due to pregnancy, weight loss, genetics or the natural aging process. Loss of skin elasticity and breast volume will cause breasts to sag and lose their youthful shape. A breast lift surgically removes excess skin, reshapes the breasts, and repositions the nipple for a firmer, more youthful look.
Good candidates for breast lift surgery include women that are generally satisfied with the current size of their breasts, but wish to make them firmer with a more youthful shape. Healthy, non-smoking women with realistic goals are the best candidates for a breast lift. Chicagoland area patients wishing to increase the size of their breasts as well as improve their shape may benefit from adding breast implants to the procedure for a combination breast augmentation/lift.
For patients considering a breast lift, Schaumburg plastic surgeon Dr. Ashpole offers a variety of breast lift options which he will discuss in detail during consultation. The technique used will depend upon the patient’s aesthetic goals, degree of ptosis (droop), and current breast size.
The most common breast lift option, commonly known as the anchor technique (named for the anchor shaped incision), is the most extensive but also offers the greatest degree of lift. Unlike less extensive options, it is effective for women with a moderate to severe degree of droop. Performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia, this technique uses three incisions. The first incision is made around the areola. The second incision runs vertically from the bottom of the areola to the crease beneath the breast. The third incision is made horizontally along the breast crease itself. After the incisions are made, the excess skin and tissue are removed and the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher, more youthful-looking position. Finally, tissue that was formerly located above the areola is brought down to reshape the breast.
For women with only a mild or moderate degree of droop, Dr. Ashpole offers several less extensive breast lift options. For some patients, these options provide improved breast shape with fewer scars. These techniques include the crescent lift(requiring only a small incision along the top of the areola),the circumareolar lift, or the vertical lift (like the anchor lift without the bottom incision). Dr. Ashpole will evaluate your personal characteristics and advise you on whether a less invasive breast lift technique is right for you.
Typically women will experience some pain, bruising and mild swelling immediately following surgery. While exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks, most women are generally able to return to work/normal activities within 7-10 days.
